Whitstable YBC fly the flag in Europe and bag 3 silver medals
Four Bowlers from Whitstable YBC travelled to Antwerp, Belgium to take part in the 11thInternational youth bowling tournament on the 29th October 2006. It was the first time any English bowlers had competed in this competition and between them they came back with 3 Silver medals and a few Euros each.
For Harry Steen, Hannah Smith, Zoe Oldham and Kirsty Belchem it was their first experience at European style bowling, Playing a five game qualifying round moving lane after every game and the top 3 bowler of each division going through to a three game final with the pinfall from the qualifying round carrying over to decide the winner. Whilst the tournament was a scratch only tournament there was different divisions based on age and gender.
At the end of the qualifying round Harry finished in 9th position having averaged 187 in the 15 to 18 year olds division. Zoe, Hannah and Kirsty all secured their place in the final. Zoe finished in second place with a 144 average in the under 12’s. Hannah managed third place with a 162 average in the 12 to 15 year olds. Kirsty finished joint third with Valerie Van Haver from Belgium. So under the tournament rules this meant that they both had to do a 9th/10th frame roll off. Both bowlers where allowed a 2 ball practice on each lane which due to the language barrier we as spectators did not know at the time. So when Kirsty left a 7 – 10 split followed by the big four we thought it was all over for her but what was this the scores where being erased and the bowlers prepared to bowl again. Valerie went first with a 9 spare, Kirsty had a quick ball change from the one used in practise and immediately got a strike. Valerie got up for her second frame making a 8 – 1 giving her a pinfall of 27 pins. Kirsty followed her strike up with another 2 strikes and a 7 giving her a pinfall of 57 pins and a place in the final.
At the end of the three games final Zoe was unable to make up any of the 29 pin difference so took second place on the podium with Bauke Jespers of Belgium finishing in first place with 1189 over the 8 games. Hannah did manage to make up some of the 43 pins enabling her to jump Laura Van Laer of Belgium to finish second behind Chantal Jacobs of Holland, with a 1254 over the 8 games. Kirsty again bowled really well with new personal best in the eighth of 259 and 9 in a row. Allowing her to make up most of the 97 pin deficit to finish in second place to Kaat Van den Driessche of Belgium.
Arny Goossens the tournament manager made us all feel very welcome as did the bowlers who are all keen to come to England and bowl in some English tournament.
