maltaflag.gifMalta's Baldacchino sets the pace

Squad A got us started and leading the field early on was Malta's federation president Paul Baldacchino with games of 204, 216, 213, 215, 207 and 205 for 1260. In second was Italian Emilio Ruggiero with 1178 and third was Italian Umberto Serrani with 1177.

In the next squad the scoring pace increased as German Herman Wimmer fired 1290 scratch with 84 h/c for 1374 and into the overall lead. Second and into second overall was England's Steve Carnell with 1299 and third was Sweden's Torbjorn Halling with 1298.

In the final squad of the day Paul Baldacchino placed first again this time with 1294 and giving him a six game qualifying total of 2554. Second in the squad was England's Mike Sykes with 1222 and third was Italian Emilio Ruggiero with 1214 placing him second overall with 2392.

sweden-flag.jpgSweden's Halling takes over at the top

Day 2 got started with England's Ray Harrison topping the D squad with 1223 and 1283 with bonus. Willy Pedersen placed second with 1210 and Belgium's Frederick Lagrou in third place with 1172.

Like the weather outside the bowling centre inside it was heating up as Sweden's Torbjorn Halling rolled games of 247, 203, 188, 225, 237, 234 for 1334 and 1424 with age bonus. His combined 2722 (211) blasted him into the overall lead as we headed to the finals.

Second was the one and only Chris Vandamme posting a modest 1241 and third was Austria's Christine Gablek with 1240.

In the next squad F the only man to have won both the senior Malta open and adult Malta open showed his true colours (probably very bright) by firing 1367 (227) and slotted into second place overall in the twelve game standings with 2608 (217).

Elsewhere in the last squad of the day Ezio Coppini from Italy placed second with 1314 and England's Ray Harrison was third on 1297 putting him in fourth overall.

Final Stages

Stage 1

England's Pat Byrne set the pace in the final stage 1 with games of 193, 235, 214 and 199 for 841 and 865 with bonus. Second was Belgium's Frederick Lagrou with 839 and third was Malta's Tony Paris with 837.

Making up the top twelve to advance were Roger Hunter, Willy Pedersen, Ignazio Cerami, John Thomsen, Jeff Platten, Emilio Ruggiero, Sammy Borg, Ezio Coppini and Sylvia Krasznai the cut with 753.

Stage 2

Just the top four from twelve would advance this time over four games and booking his place was Sweden's Roger Olofsson with 279, 221, 234 and 223 for 957 (239). Second was England's Jeff Platten with 914, Third was Malta's Paul Baldacchino and fourth to advance was Belgium's Frederick Lagrou with 823.

Stage 3

It all got exciting in stage three as we hit matchplay and two game knockout matches over total pinfall. In a tight opener Sweden's Torbjorn Halling squeezed past Belgium's Frederick Lagrou 470-468 as German Hermann Wimmer edged past Malta's Paul Baldacchino 425-413.

Belgium's Chris Vandamme easily beat England's Jeff Platten 454-373 and finally England's Steve Carnell brushed past Roger Olofsson 407-402.

Stage 4

Down to the final four and all great players went to battle with two advancing to the final. Booking his placed was England's Steve Carnell who defeated Sweden's Torbjorn Halling with games of 226 and 236 for 462 to Halling's 245,160-(15) 435. Joining him in the final was Belgium's Chris Vandamme with a win over German Hermann Wimmer, Vandamme scoring 268, 212 (0) 480 and Wimmer with 211,228 (14) 467.

Grand Final

He may not be Maltese but Chris Vandamme might have a statue on the beautiful island one day in the future due to some legendary wins in bowling. The tall bronzed Belgium former British Open champion and European senior star had previously won the Malta open three times and senior open twice and was in the final yet again. Standing in the way of another historical win was England's Steve Carnall  or Carnage as he is widely known. Steve was going to be no pushover.

That is exactly what it was in the first game as Vandamme strung the strikes to ten in a row ending with 289 with Carnage unable to get near with 215. The Englishman started with a fourbagger as Vandamme hit spares and a strike and Carnage was in with a shout. Vandamme made a move hitting a turkey and was still 50 in front and at the end a 247 from Carnage was not enough as Vandamme hit 217 for 506 with Carnage on 462.

Chris Vandamme champion again for the third time and still the only man to win both the Open and Senior open titles.
